Memorial Rain

The story, from start to bitter end.

*Bright
I don't think I'll ever be able to read this one again, but it stays with me still - and it's been some time since I read it. It's that strong. It drives you to tears, it makes you think, it makes you curse stupid decisions made by foolish men. The bitter reality is described with a subtlety that takes the breath out of you. And then you cry, this is what war is. Nothing romantic about it, it's death folks, and it drives me to tears.

Broken Promises

at PonnyExpressen

Kid led Katy from the barn, choosing to walk her out of the yard rather than ride her. He had watched as Cody arrived a short time before and knew that he or Buck might be awakened by the sound if he rode. Buck would come after him, he felt sure, although his friend had not come after him that afternoon. That was different, that was thinking time and Buck was being the friend that he had come to respect and care for more than any he had ever had before, Kid could see that now. But this was decision time and Buck would not be happy with this decision. But with Kid gone, his friend would have to stay. He would have to care for the ranch. And for Lou. He would have to keep her safe. He was a true friend and that is what he would do, Kid felt sure.

That fact was the only thing that comforted him in this decision, knowing how well cared for Lou would be. And maybe, somewhere in that time building the ranch, Buck might find a place for himself in his daughter's life. It would pain him not to be a part of Jane's as well, but there were some things that couldn't be changed. Like John's death. Like Kid's promise. Like obligation and responsibility. And this war. He would return, but he would return as a Virginian, proud and honorable. He reached the outskirts of town and mounted Katy. She shook out the reins preparing for the speed she knew would be expected of her, flicking her ears in anticipation. He spurred her gently and was rewarded with a jolt of energy that smoothly rolled from trot to flat out gallop in seconds. He headed into the darkness, without a look behind him.

When you come to this last part you're probably emotionally exhausted and then this ends the story. It's like Kid is saying good-bye to a life he had at his reach but couldn't catch. Just because he was who he was. Laney made the story so emotionally plausible that at the end, I couldn't help but let my tears flow.

Nora

Going Home

The story

Sameena
I love how Nora is able to capture Cody's grief as. Seeing, yes, seeing, Cody break down after Noah's death and try to make sense of it, well it was enough to make a grown woman cry.

The Story

Charla
The angst and sadness of all the characters truly wrenches the heart of readers. All are victims, and all feel such pain. The Civil War, which is so vividly painted,
with Kid at war and for those left at home, is the perfect backdrop for this powerful fanfic.
