The Sharp End of a Season
First things first. I'm most probably going to Damascus for a week in the beginning of March. Strange but true.

Secondly, I'd like to relish the traditional moment of writing down the songs that have mattered the most during the season that has passed. Because, it IS the end of a season, in some ways, at least. But I won't change, of course. Nothing feels different, ever. Probably not even in Damascus. Probably not even if I'd drink three bottles of date wine (al-ghawl الغول).

So, the songs. I won't include songs from previous seasons, no matter how important they were this season. This will make the lists shorter over time. The Jam and The Kinks will suffer most. And again, the songs doesn't even have to be good to make it on this list. Most of them are, though.

Two or three are from a really great collection that some kind soul at (they are not many) put together, based on a selection Morrissey called “Singles to be Cremated With“ in NME some time in 1988. I am desperate for Morrissey-endorsed music; I am truly silly that way. There's another favourite track of his there. Which is it?

Antony & the Johnsons – “Cripple and the Starfish“, “Candy Says“ (live), “You Are My Sister“.
Babyshambles – “Albion“.
Belle & Sebastian – “Dressed Up In You“.
Cocteau Twins – “Lorelei“.
The Crystals – “What a Nice Way To Turn 17“.
Denim – “Middle of the Road“.
Dexys Midnight Runners – “Old“.
Fairground Attraction – “A Smile and a Whisper“, “The Wind Knows My Name“.
Felt – “Whirpool Vision of Shame“.
Franz Ferdinand – “Eleanor Put Your Boots On“.
The Jam – “Eton Rifles“, “Tales From the Riverbank“.
The Kinks – “Days“, “She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina“.
Liekki – “Lilja“.
Kirsty Maccoll – “Soho Square“, “The Butcher Boy“, “Tomorrow Never Comes“, “As Long As You Hold Me“.
Martha Reeves & the Vandellas – “Third Finger, Left Hand“.
Maxïmo Park – “Postcard of a Painting“.
Nico – “Fairest of the Seasons“.
Stina Nordenstam – “Winter Killing“, “Everyone Else in the World“.
Pony Club – “Single“.
Roxy Music – “Dance Away“.
Scott Walker – “Angelica“, “When Joanna Loved Me“.
The Stranglers – “Duchess“.
T.Rex – “Jeepster“.
Talking Heads – “Listening Wind“.
The Toys – “Attack“.

And that should be the disused power station in Battersea. Can anyone confirm? I suppose I could look it up, but no. See you in Vasa!
