Magnetic Fields in Stockholm
Magnetic Fields played at Cirkus in Stockholm on Sunday evening, which caused me to miss the Euro 2008 final. I'm still not sure if I made the right decision. I have always had some issues with the band, and it seems their current live act just exaggerate those bad aspects. It was not the setup itself: a five-piece sitting on chairs in a row including main songwriter Stephin Merritt, playing acoustic instruments. It sounded well, and in theory I like many of the songs very much. It was the presentations of the songs that irritated me. It was often the pianist Claudia Gonson, and it was often something like ”This song is about [murder/rape/necrophilia]. We are funny tonight!”. And then came the song, which was about murder/rape/necrophilia. The end result for me was confusion. What are they trying to convey?
The truth is, I can barely stand the ”black comedy” of Stephin Merritt when just listening to the songs from a record. At worst, they are ridiculous. I just don't understand what they are trying to tell me. The meaningless and seriously unfunny stage banter didn't clarify things, but made it all the more irritating.

i always would prefer a magnetic fields concert to any football-match, in this case germany played as they used to do no fun, no ideas against the very good spain.
i was at the gig in berlin in a church which was brilliant and the way you told the stageperformance it sounds the same like the one i went to.
but anyway the songs itself were good.

I actually heard some comments from another person who had attended the Berlin concert, and she also complained about the same thing.
