Bambuns inneboende styrka
Our hosts pointed out to me that when they build things here, they use bamboo as scaffolding. I thought well, that might be okay for small sheds and stuff like that, and I was completely astonished when I saw scaffolding made of bamboo outside a skyscraper, all the way up! I have no idea how they do this. It's made of only bamboo and lace, they don't even have boards to walk on! Some of the bamboo poles are longer than the others, for no apparent reason, and it all looks like a hack job, but it works.

I heard that the death rate of construction workers went up when they tried metal scaffolds. Bamboo scaffolds are apparently the safer alternative in China.
