16th April: Johan Hedberg - Who is that?

In the late couple of months, the Penguins have had a great offence since Mario’s return. Jaromir Jagr won the Art Ross trophy for the fourth consecutive time, and both Alexei Kovalev and Martin Straka have had their best season so far in their respective careers.

Janne Laukkanen have had a steady season, so have Darius Kasparaitis. But looking at the overall-part, the Pens defense hasn’t had their best season.

Many tried to put the blame on the goalies. After having a steady rookie season; sophmore Jean Sebastien Aubin started the season as the Pens number one goalie. But he didn’t live up to his expectations the way they wanted him to, so Garth Snow was aquired. He signed as a free agent, and the Penguins had a new number one goalie, who did his job quite ok, but still people were mentioning their "goalie-problem"

At trading deadline, Craig Patrick aquired Bobby Dollas and a Swedish goalie named Johan Hedberg for Jeff Norton. So far; no one’s regretting…

Johan, a native of Leksand, Sweden, played great those 11 games he played before the playoff started, posting a 9-1-1 record.

Now the question is if Hedberg can put up some stellar performances against the Capitals in the reminders of this first round games, and if so; can he keep it up for the rest of the playoff so the Penguins can be the one celebrating in the end of the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Hedberg hasn’t proved himself 100% steady because of playing just 11 games with the Penguins, but the potential is definitely there.

Hedberg was great in the opener against the Caps in Washington, allowing just one goal, but unfortunately it was the lone goal that meant that the Caps were leading 1-0 in games over the Pens. But it wasn’t Hedberg’s fault. He had stopped a few difficult shots and providing that the Caps didn’t get a couple of early goals. Now we need Hedberg to step up and carry the team further on in the Playoff. Jagr and Lemiux are the leaders of this team, but maybe now the team has got themselves a third leader along with Jagr and Lemiux? Johan Hedberg has definently the potential to become a franchise-goalie, but the question is if he can live up to that?

On March 11, no one in Pittsburgh, and very few outside of Pittsburgh had ever heard of Johan Hedberg.

On March 12, the Swedish goaltender became a Penguin, and we all look forward to the continue…
