Floorball - A sport for all of us

ibstick.jpg (105167 bytes)A couple of months ago, the webmaster of the Unofficial Jaromir Jagr Site, Fredrik, decided he wanted to tell all hockey fans (mainly in USA) about the new, but rapidly growing sport floorball - so he added a new section to his site (which I liked a lot) dealing with this modern indoor game. In this article of mine I'm going to tell you about my thought about floorball, and I'll also try to give some additional information about the sport to what Fredrik writes on the site.

As I mentioned above, floorball is only played in indoor arenas. And for me, the game has meant a lot. I am one of those who ain't real pros at skating (of course I like skating. but as I haven't been part of a real hockey team there hasn't been any opportunity to improve my skills). This has been a real problem for me, because I consider myself quite good at the other aspects of the game: there's nothing wrong with my stamina, I've got high pace, quite good skills on the puck (ball) and my technique is above average. So, the only thing that stopped me from playing hockey was that I didn't learn to skate professionally when I was a small kid. But then my life was saved :) by the game of floorball, to which I was introduced in school. I started to play it when I was around 11, and now, almost ten years after that - I still play floorball, and I still like it as much as I did in the early nineties. What is it then that is so good about the sport? Well, it fits me perfectly. As I want to run a lot, the fast paced floorball is just about the game for me. It's also easier to learn how to shoot correctly in floorball as the ball weighs only a fraction of the big, clumsy puck. Another of the pros is the cheapness of the sport. In hockey you have to buy a lot of equipment, from a helmet to expensive skates. But in floorball you only nead a stick - which costs about 60 dollars. And that's a good one!
Even if floorball is big here in Finland, Sweden and Switzerland, it hasn't become a major threat to hockey in the States yet. But let us wait a couple of decades, and maybe then there won't be any NHL anymore. Instead there will be something called NFL - national floorball league. But hey, that name is taken yet, isn't it? Well...who the heck cares about American football really? :-)
