The third jersey penguin

On Thursday, July 13 the Penguins will unveil their new third jersey. This one will feature the old Penguin logo of the "skating" penguin, or as we have always called him, the "mean" penguin.

If you read Fabian's article called "The Penguins vs. the Penguin", you know he questioned why our favorite team is named after a bird who lives in Antarctica. Well, as a person who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, I can tell you that the weather can sometimes get bad enough that you think you may be in Antarctica and the Mellon Arena really does look like an igloo! Fabian's comments are all true, penguins don't have much body fat, they are much smaller than hockey players, etc. But he forgot to mention one thing about the birds -- they are mean and nasty and will peck each other in fights -- doesn't that remind you of Darius Kasparitis? The new jersey will bring back that mean penguin and hopefully bring a little more toughness to our team.

Now that Tugnutt is gone, much of the Pen's season will fall onto the capable, but comparatively untried, shoulders of Jean-Sebastien Aubin. He is quite popular with his teammates and played well last year until his
injury. He could have benefited greatly from spending more time around Ron Tugnutt, but he probably learned a good bit in the short time they were together on the team. A large part of Aubin's success will depend on the
play of our defenseman this year and that is why the third jersey will hopefully remind the team that they need to be tough, nasty Penguins this coming season!
