| Well, here we are nearing the end of another great season in
the NHL. Now some of you might be saying that this season wasn't that great at all (Leafs
fans, Lindros fans). But it has been. Look at the goal scoring race. For sure Pavel Bure of the Florida Panthers is going to win the Maurice Richard trophy for the second straight year. Just imagine what he would do on a team with a better supporting cast. The totals could be baffling. We have had streaks everywhere. Just this pats week the NHL was worried because two teams on their biggest streaks ever had to play each other. Edmonton had 9 straight wins and then tied Florida to be unbeaten in 10 games! And their opponent the Devils were on a 9 game winning streak (they have now made it 11)! And the game between these two hot teams (the hottest in the league) proved to be one the greatest games that I have watched in a long time. The time is also coming to decide who the nominees are going to be for the NHL hardware. There are people that are saying that Colorado's coach should win the Jack Adam's trophy for coach of the year. No way! Of course that team is going to be that good with that much talent. I say give to a guy that had hardly anything to work with, Marc Crawford in Vancouver. They sit in 5th spot in he Western Conference and are going to the playoffs for the first time in a loooonggg time. Now this trophy is (in my opinion) a lock and if anybody but him gets it I will be suprised. Tommy Salo's deserves the Vezina for top goalie. He has outplayed Cechmanek by far. Not only that he is in the top three in almost of all the goaltending categories. Give it to him. Leetch will get the Norris, and the Calder will go to Brad Richards from Tampa Bay. When this season started we as the fans had no idea that around the All-star break time that we would get the greatest gift to hockey this season. Mario Lemiuex's return. WOW! How good has this guy been? After missing 3 and a half years he comes back to play and he does not disappoint. He has now scored 61 points in just 36 games. And he has rejuvenated Mario Jr. (Jaromir Jagr-check the first name it works out perfect), who has gotten 68 points in 38 games. With Mario coming back and helping Jagr find his touch again he has vaulted to the top of the scoring race with 105 points, 2 points ahead of (who in my opinion will the Hart trophy), Joe Sakic. They have had different linemates since Mario's return (Kovalev, Hrdina, Stevens), but that does not matter , whoever plays with these guys is going to tally up the points. In my opinion there is only one more line that can match this line today (Sakic, Tanguay, Hejduk) from Colorado. That line has combined for 105 goals between the three of them. There has been a ton of things that Jagr has done over the course of this season since the arrival of The magnificent one. He has scored his 400th career goal, gotten his 1000th career point. And he is now poised to win his 5th scoring race. If he does win the scoring race (Art Ross trophy), it will be his 4th time in a row. In the last 6 years the Penguins have owned that trophy. Mario, Jagr, Mario, Jagr, Jagr, Jagr is how it has been won for those 6 years. Is that not crazy! With all of the star players in the league not one could wrestle the piece of hardware away from them? And the Penguins were not supposed to be in the playoffs the last two years or this year at all. The only question is how far will the Pens be able to get on scoring ability alone? It has been shown time and time again this season, they have HUGE goaltending problems. They also need defencemen mending. This has been a great season (not over yet though-about 10 games left) and the playoffs will be even better. |
