Hot Air Airships

Early hot air airships were just balloons fixed with rudder and fins, and  propeller and engine added to basket.

Since then they have become very manouverable pressurised flying machines. Steering is most precise when flying against wind. In sidewind the airship drifts downwind. Inflation and ground handling is difficult if surface wind is more than 5 knots, (2.5 m/s).

Hot air airship competitions are about speed and precise steering.
