BRIEFING: THUNDERSTORMS COMING FROM WEST ONE AFTER ANOTHER. |

| FORECAST CAUSES GLOOM IN THE AUDIENCE. WE PROCEED TO
TUUTARI. WE HAVE PERMISSION TO FLY UNTIL MIDNIGHT. |

| TUUTARI AT 19:35, WINDY. MEDIA INTERVIEWS EVENT DIRECTOR PIT
THIBO. |

| AT 21:35 OSCAR LINDSTROM PUTS FINAL STITCHES ON HIS
ENVELOPE. BIGGER AND DIFFERENT. |
![]() |
| 21:50, NOT YET AN AIRSHIP BUT FRANK PRELL'S BIRTHDAY CAKE
BALLOON. IT IS STILL WINDY AND THE APPROACHING CLOUDS HAVE NOT
GIVEN UP. |

| AT 22:33 SUN HAS SET
BEHIND TUUTARI HILL. MARTIN HAS PIBALLS READY IN PLASTIC BAGS. HE HAS
ASSURED EVERYDODY THAT WEATHER IS FLYABLE AT 23:00. |

| FINALLY GREEN FLAG (AND RAINBOW) AT 23:00 IN THE SHADOW OF
TUUTARI HILL. ONE HOUR LEFT TO FLY THE TASKS. |
TASKS. Tasksheet gives two tasks, one for speed and one for precision. Gate, pylon and target positions are given on appendix. |
![]() |
| PILOTS TAKE OFF AS SOON AS THEY CAN FOR THE FIRST LAP OF
PYLON RACE. MUCH BIGGER AND DIFFERENT. |
![]() |
| AIRSHIPS HAVE TURNED THE PYLON AT THE OPPOSITE END
AND ARE NOW RACING BACK. BIGGER. |
![]() |
SOME AIRSHIPS ARE SHORT AND
THICK, SOME LONG AND ALMOST SLENDER, SOME BETWEEN THE TWO. HIGH
AIRSPEED TENDS TO LIFT THE AIRSHIP'S NOSE UP, AND HOT AIR KEEPS IT
THERE. RIMAS IS STRUGGLING WITH THAT PHENOMENOM DURING THE PYLON RACE. |
| HIGH AIRSPEED LIFTS THE NOSE
OF LONG AIRSHIPS AS WELL, BUT IT RESULTS IN TWISTING THE HULL SO
THAT AIRSHIP RESEMBLES A CUCUMBER MORE THAN A THICK CIGAR THAT HAS HAPPENED TO GENNADY'S AIRSHIP |

| BORIS NIGROWSKY TAKES OFF HALF AN HOUR AFTER THE OTHERS. IT
LOOKS AS IF HE WERE CHASING A FIESTA BALLOON IN A HARE AND HOUNDS TASK. |
| RESULTS OF THE PYLON
RACE. Besnard was the
fastest with 17 minutes 45 seconds. Oparin had the second best time but
his penalty points dropped him to rank 4. Eckardt was second in
points and Contegiacomo third. Result sheet
reveals that Ushakova and Kostiuškevičius forgot to fly through the
finish gate, which robbed them of the time they had been fighting for. |

| BAMBERSKI APPROACHING BULL'S EYE TARGET. OPARIN OVER TARGET
IN BIG PICTURE. |
![]() |
| IT IS ALMOST MIDNIGHT WHEN OSCAR LINSTRÖM DROPS. DETAIL. |
| RESULTS FOR THE
PRECISION TASK. Result
sheet shows
that the Bull's Eye Target task is a failure in the sense that it is
unable to rank the pilots in order of their steering skill: 8 out of 11
competitors dropped their maker on red and received the same 300 points
each. The X-target task works a little better, but three pilots dropped
their marker at the very center. These tasks are certainly difficult,
but to skillful pilots they are nevertheless too easy. Besnard, Galkin and Lindström were the three best in Precision Task. Besnard horded 2180 points during the second competition flight. |
