Kilvan Kennel is located near to the west coast of Finland - the closest bigger city is Seinäjoki, where the annual Tango-festival takes place. We breed mudis in home environment, and our dogs are first and foremost companions, pets, sports- and hobby dogs.
Our history with the mudi breed started at mid 90's, but it was almost ten years later before we started breeding mudis. Prefix Kilvan- is soon 60 years old, and since the 1970's Kilvan kennel has breed Hungarian breeds. In 2004 we had our first mudi litter. We're carefully planning each litter in advance, and are keeping our breeding work in small scale. We have currently four dogs at home, Pipõ, her daughter Trolli, and the Hungarian imports male Kopja and female Manó. Both Trolli and Kopja are young dogs, born in 2004, and Pipõ at age of 7 is still not concidered as "old"; Manó, is three years.
Mudi came to our house by "accident". Soile has had dogs since 1970's, first German Shepherds and Rough Collie, who introduced her to obedience training and national working trials. In the beginning of 1980's Soile had first touch to the Hungarian breeds; she got a Hungarian Komondor from Marjatta Jääskeläinen, founder of Kilvan kennels. Later in 1980's Soile got her first Hungarian sheperd dogs, Pumis, through mrs. Jääskeläinen, and in the beginning of 1990's Kilvan-prefix was shared by mrs. Jääskeläinen and Soile Laitinen until mrs. Jääskeläinen passed away.
Our main concerns for choosing the breeding dogs are: Health, Tempperament, Appearance. We're trying to preserve and protect the breed. The parents of the litters will normally be character tested and officially health checked (hips, patellas and eyes). When using a dog living abroad it's not always possible to find a male that will meet every criteria, but we try our best. We're aiming to widen the gene pool in Finland by importing new breeding dogs and using such males that have not yet been used in Scandinavia. When ever possible, we will try to use a Hungarian male from such line that will fit our breeding plans. We will select the males based on their breed typical appearance, health, and tempperament in equal ranks. Also the health, tempperament and appearance of the close relatives (parents, sisters, progenies) of the breeding dog will be taken into concideration.
Our next litter is planned for spring 2007. Take a look at "puppies" page for information of the planned litter.
